How Lakehouse Veterinary takes the stress out of payments with Provet

"Provet is the pillar of how we operate, and our functionality all stems from that central pulse.” Matthew Kemper, DVM
Lakehouse Veterinary, a small independent companion-animal practice in the US runs its whole operation on Provet, the all-in-one veterinary PIMS. With Provet Pay, its integrated payments solution, owner Matthew Kemper, DVM, has taken much of the pressure out of how clients pay for care, for his clients and for himself.
Kemper started the practice by seeing patients inside their own homes, going live on Provet in January 2023. He has since opened a brick-and-mortar clinic in Ijamsville, Maryland in June 2026, and Provet has been there at every step as he’s grown the practice. He came to veterinary medicine later than most, and he brought an efficiency-minded eye to how a clinic should run.
The repetitive admin his old software wouldn’t automate

Matthew Kemper, DVM, did not set out to be a veterinarian. He spent several years in international affairs in Washington, DC, before enrolling in veterinary school. “It was very data-heavy work,” he says, “and there was a constant focus on creating efficiencies and using technology to make my job easier.”
A decade in, he wanted a more fulfilling connection with people day to day. In practice, he found his background could not only help improve the client experience but also “find ways to integrate programs and automate repetitive tasks that save me hours, even days, of work – and therefore, allow more time spent with the client and patient.”
The cloud-based software he first met got in the way. The systems were not intuitively designed, and they could not automate common, everyday tasks. That surprised him. “I think that if practices want to grow and be successful, they need more efficiency on the administrative side.”
Why Lakehouse Veterinary chose Provet

Kemper wanted a clinic that runs efficiently and looks after the well-being of both staff and clients. The first thing he did was find a cloud-based system to be, in his words, “the pillar of how we operate.”
Provet filled the gaps he had run into before. He can set his own follow-up reminders. “If I need to set myself a reminder to follow up on a client about something, I can do that,” he says. Client reminders got easier too. “I use the texting functionality a lot, and I can set it up once so that I don’t even have to think about it, which helps keep me organized – and my clients love getting text reminders about when their pet’s next appointment is or when the next vaccine is due.”
The integrations mattered as much as the automation. Provet’s connection with Vetcove, his veterinary supply solution, keeps his inventory on the latest pricing. “Because I’m often buying the same things over and over, price increases risk cutting deeper and deeper into profit margins unless I stay on top of them. But with Provet, I don’t have to; it’s always reflecting the new price on the invoice and maintaining my margins.” Exporting his financials to Xero, his accounting software, is “one click of a button.”
Less stress in settling up

The clearest change shows up at the point of payment. With Provet Pay, a native extension of Provet, the steps from invoice to payment collapse into one. “As soon as I finalize the invoice and click the ‘Provet Pay’ button, it just shows up on the point-of-sale unit,” Kemper says. “It works great.”
Many clients keep a tokenized card on file, which securely stores their card details for automated, contactless payments. “If someone wants to reorder food or preventatives, they can just shoot me a text and I can immediately process the request with their card on file. Or I can send them a text-to-pay link if they prefer.”
That flexibility lowers the pressure around recommended care, and not only for the client. Kemper says it is often “a hard mental shift for the veterinarian” to move from discussing care to asking for payment. “So I might spend a lot of time going over the estimate with a client, then send the invoice later.” For euthanasia appointments, he handles it all ahead of time. “I will typically take care of everything beforehand – an electronic consent form and a payment link. So, going into the appointment, it’s much less stressful for everyone not to have to talk about what’s owed.”
Room to grow
Lakehouse reached a milestone in June 2026, when it opened its brick-and-mortar clinic in Ijamsville. The move gives Kemper room to add services, grow the team, and lean further into the tools that keep the practice efficient.
One idea he has described is subscription-based wellness plans. They would let him automate incremental payments and offer discounts on services, softening the “sticker shock” of veterinary costs for pet parents.
As the practice grows, Provet is built to grow with it. That is the point for Kemper: one system at the center of the practice, doing more of the administrative work, so his team can spend their time on patients and clients.
